From small ditches to pressurized systems: a drop’s journey
Modern irrigation systems, such as pressurized pipeline networks, enable efficient water use and reduce losses. Small ditches, which are open channels, have been in used to transport water to crops since 6000 BC in ancient Mesopotamia in the Fertile Cresent Region between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers. Irrigation techniques have evolved over the centuries up to present day, the transformation to modern day techniques was influenced by the increased need for sustainable climate smart irrigation techniques. Pressurized networks, on the other hand, allow for more precise and efficient water distribution, improving crop productivity and quality.
